MBM ARQUITECTES is an architecture practice with sufficient capacity to take on large projects without losing control of the architectural quality. The 25 component members form a flexible core that can adapt rapidly to different circumstances for both national and overseas projects. The large projects and those produced abroad or far from Barcelona always involve the collaboration of local architects and/or engineers. This ability to adjust to different cultural and economic realities has been successfully carried out in recent projects in Mexico, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Brazil and England.
The working method is based on a design initiated and controlled jointly by the partners, in the areas of architecture and urbanism, and in collaboration with Lluís Pau, a specialist in interior design projects.
The practice was set up by Martorell and Bohigas in 1951, being joined by Mackay in 1962. Capdevila and Gual became partners in 2000. It is based in Barcelona and over the last 45 years has designed and completed over 500 architecture, urbanism and design projects. It has won numerous national and international competitions and been involved in the recovery of the role of the architect in city design. This proved to be a particularly effective area in the reconstruction of Barcelona’s public spaces during the first decade of democracy and in the preparation of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. The practice was responsible for the design of the Olympic Village and the Olympic Marina, which opened the city of Barcelona up to the Mediterranean.
Its activity has produced to cultural debate, on occasion controversial, in the fields of teaching and architecture and urbanism, and is complemented by lectures and articles. They are the authors of over 20 books, and regularly contribute articles to newspapers and magazines. Their works have been published in various prestigious national and international journals, and both as MBM arquitectes and individually they have received various national and international prizes. |
