MBM designed an entire street block, the Kleine Circus, that forms part of the operation to extend Maastricht’s city centre, known as Ceramique Project, the work of architect Jo Coenen. The project sought two specific objectives. Firstly, to improve its relation with the environment, it opens up the block in a U-shape towards Heugemerweg (a nearby old district) and introduces a cylindrical building at the rear to maintain the spatial atmosphere of the U. The height of the buildings decreases towards Heugemerweg in order to connect with the scale of building in the old neighbourhood. The second aim was to create a contrast between the architectural character of the solid street façades with regular windows and the façades of the interior of the block, which are dynamic with alternating horizontal strips of solids and glass. To further highlight this contrast, the south-east wing was turned around to open it up to the south and the new Heugemerweg park.
