The town of Alkmaar organised an international competition to provide the old town and church square with a multiuse centre, comprising a museum, a library, and a music and dance school. Standing in the strong presence of the church is a building constituted of glazed elements and similar in size to the surrounding houses. Courts are inserted between the glazed elements to introduce daylight and make the whole complex less heavy. The music and dance school is situated on the lowest floor, with concrete walls and openings into the courtyards. The ground floor is practically empty, forming a prolongation of the square. The upper floors house the museum. One of the double-height modules contains the library. The administrative facilities are positioned on the top floor, on the landscaped roof. The whole complex is unified by a lightweight wooden envelope in which openings of different sizes are effected, directing the visitor’s gaze towards singular features around the building.
