Additional notes In The Netherlands the title of architect has legal protection since 1988, but the profession has no such official status. Only architects, whether Dutch or foreign, registered in the legal register may call themselves architects. Registered Architects are not subjected to a code of conduct, nor is any practical experience required.

Description Design of buildings, feasibility studies, control of construction costs, supervision and co-ordination of the construction/realisation of the designs, all building permits.
 
MECHANISM CHECKING LICENSE TO PRACTISE
Description None. Anybody may apply for a building permit.
 
ARCHITECT'S LIABILITY
Description The liability is limited to a period of 5 years after completion of the commission, for culpable faults made by the architect or his staff. The architect is not responsible for the faults of third parties.

Description Members of the BNA who operate as private architects have the obligation to insure themselves when entering a contract (according to the SC 1997), although in The Netherlands there is no statutory obligation of insurance.

Additional notes Not a fee scale as such, but a system how to calculate fees. Standaard Voorwaarden Rechtsverhouding Opdrachtgever-Architect 1997 (Standard Conditions Legal Relationship Client-Architect) mentions the systems how to calculate the fees: on the basis of the building costs, on spent time, at a fixed price and other methods. Fees on the basis of building costs are calculated as a diminishing percentage of increasing building costs and according to a classification of buildings related to their complexity.

If foreign architects are authorised to work independently, what type of collaboration with national architects is recommended? When a foreign architect has found a Dutch client, it is thought best to seek a temporary cooperation with a Dutch colleague for the duration of this commission. An outline for such a single cooperation is available at the BNA.
In the event that foreign architects are not authorised to work independently, what is the stipulated formula of collaboration with national architects?
